Town Hall meetings set next week in Google Holler, NC

GOOGLE HOLLER, NC – Hickory and Lenoir, two metro All-America cities in Google Holler invite citizens, business and community leaders to its Town Hall meetings.

“Come to one or both of the meetings, and spread the word, the more the merrier, and we’ll have a googliy good time” said Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright.  “During the Town Hall meetings we will give an update on the Hickory Lenoir Google initiative and we want to hear from citizens, and business and community leaders how a gigabit per second connection, which is more than 100 times faster than the current connection, help you and help the entire community.”

“We need to look at all angles, how will this super fast network assist our medical and manufacturing communities, small businesses, governments, designers, architects, students, educators and more,” added Mayor Wright.

The Town Hall meeting in Hickory will be Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at the Julian G. Whitener Municipal (City Hall), 76 North Center, Hickory.

The Town Hall meeting in Lenoir will be Thursday, March 11 at 7 p.m. in the joint City/County Chambers, 905 West Avenue, Lenoir.

Background:

The Hickory/Lenoir Google Fiber to the Home and Business Request for Information (RFI) application is a collective effort with support from municipalities and counties along the U.S. 321 data center corridor in Catawba and Caldwell Counties.  The intent of the Google project is to eliminate the bandwidth bottleneck so that Google can develop and test high speed network applications, and Google will open their network to any and all service providers who want access to a large bandwidth “pipe” to businesses and households.

The high test speed is a gigabit per second connection, which is more than 100 times faster than the current connection available in the area.  The communities are confident that if Hickory/Lenoir is awarded as a test site for the ultra-fast network, the community would see significant economic growth, as it will open doors and be an attraction for local business to stay, and recruit more industries, creating more opportunity for all citizens and local governments.

  1. Ike Perkins says:

needless to say, i am excited about this joint effort.

  2. I can’t wait for Hickory to get it’s Fiber – actually Fibre – Optic network. That way I can start selling my SSD Drives! Just checkout my YouTube videos, and more coming, where I demonstrate the awesome power of SSD (Solid State Disk). I have been a computer technician since I was 18 years old, and have always wondered how you replace that slow, old, tired Hard Drive that slows down ANY computer. I was told about the first Sprint Fiber Optic Network in Atlanta, GA back in 1998. I’ll probably be the first person in my area, compiling and testing Google Chrome 64-bit on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
